Career Awareness Lesson Plans
Initiated with support from Ohio's Career Awareness funds, Four Cities Compact in Ohio identified the critical need for elementary-level career awareness. This led them to adopt "There’s a Hat for That" to showcase diverse careers in a fun and meaningful way.
They empowered Early Childhood Education students to create and deliver tailored lessons to second-grade students. Four Cities Compact also purchased over 1,000 copies of "There’s a Hat for That" to send home with all second-grade students. These passionate 11 student-teachers visited 44 classrooms, reaching 922 second graders in one term! Teachers were overwhelmingly pleased with the lessons delivered, providing comments such as, “Please teach the lesson again next year!”
To support and encourage these high school CTE students further, I established the “There’s A Hat For That Scholarship Challenge." This scholarship was not just about the prize money, but was created as a platform to contribute to the educational community, share innovative teaching methods, and inspire the next generation of students and educators to explore careers earlier! I am elated to announce that students Austin Cottrill and Ivey Stevens won first place, and Star Rivera, Jake Rummer, and Alex Innocenti won second-place scholarships! Their lesson plans and handouts are now available to all students, teachers, parents, and early childhood educators. Enjoy!

The story behind "There's a Hat for That"
We often ask children, “What do you want to be when you grow up?”
This question implies there should be one fixed answer. But it is more likely that children will experiment with many occupations and explore multiple careers throughout their life.
At all ages, children show interests, abilities, gifts, and unfulfilled potential. Observing these subtle signs and encouraging exploration towards activities that align with their personality will point them towards satisfying and meaningful careers.
In There's a Hat for That!, children and adults alike will delight in the melodic rhymes and colorful illustrations of monkeys exploring different careers, trying on hats until they find the perfect fit.
