(Re)Defining the Goal: The True Path to Career Readiness in the 21st Century

Audience: Industry, educators, community, mixed
Dr. Fleming’s inspiring presentation discusses new paradigms and tangible action steps for career and technical education to help all students gain a competitive advantage. Technical skills are the new currency in the 21st century, but how do we balance preparing students for both higher education and the workforce? Producer of the viral animated video Success in the New Economy, he will make a clear case for students to explore career choices early, make informed decisions when declaring their college education goal, and consider technical skill acquisition and real-world application in tandem with a general education. Finally, his new video will both invigorate and challenge the evolution of career readiness.  Are you ready to pivot?

Becoming their First Choice

Audience: CTE Educators

For years you have forged partnerships, created pathways, and developed programs…yet we still have empty seats in our classes. Many career & technical educational programs remain the “alternative” or “safety” option. Why doesn’t everyone just “get it” already? While we balance preparing students for both higher education and the workforce, it is time to shift our messaging. We need to (re)define the goal and (re)examine why the tipping point still has not yet occurred towards pathways, industry credentials, career readiness, and the pursuit of gainful employment. It’s time to become their first choice.

Asking the Right Questions to Facilitate Student Success

Audience: Counselors, Educators

We all know a 4-year degree may lead to economic prosperity and opens many doors for our students.  However, we also know that the university pathway isn’t for everyone. Technical skills are the new currency in the 21st century and they make all students more competitive. But how do we balance preparing students for both college and the workforce? Dr. Kevin Fleming will present data and a new animated video in a way that both invigorates and challenges the evolution of career readiness, counseling, and educational planning. It is time to reexamine what questions we should be asking of our students, and of ourselves, to maximize student success.

Additionally, many have opted to provide attendees copies of my new book (Re)Defining the Goal  in tandem with a keynote presentation.  It retails on Amazon for $15, but I always pass along my author’s discount for bulk purchases to groups that bring me on-site. I am also happy to sign books after the presentation.

Dr. Kevin Fleming

Producer of the viral animation video “Success in the New Economy,” and author of the bestseller, “(Re)Defining the Goal,” Dr. Fleming is a passionate advocate for ensuring all students enter the labor market with a competitive advantage. He travels internationally speaking to both educators and industry helping to shatter antiquated thinking about education, skills training, and career readiness. His mission: Close the skills gap one audience at a time.

Dr. Fleming currently supports the advancement of education as the Vice President of Strategic Development at Norco College (California).  Previously, he served as Dean of Instruction for Career & Technical Education programs and grants. With deep experience analyzing industry trends and workforce needs, he provided customized geospatial labor market research for the largest higher education system in America: the California Community Colleges.

Dr.  Fleming is a faculty member, international speaker, and recovering academic elitist. A true life-long learner, he has earned two Bachelor’s degrees, two Masters degrees, and a Ph.D.  But it was his CTE industry certification in geographical information systems (GIS) that lifted him out of working poverty.  He is a proud eagle scout, father, has completed 5 marathons, and won a spelling bee in the third grade.

The duration of a professional development keynote presentation is 30-150 minutes (flexible per your agenda) and includes an animated video.  Tailored for educational, industry, community, or mixed audiences, he is committed to advocating for the neglected majority of our businesses and students desperate for relevant education combined with applied skills training.
